Even though I lack confidence in my own ability to be everything a missionary needs to be, there is one thing I am confident in, and that is the enabling part of Christ's atonement. The atonement is there not just for repentance, though that part is super important, it is also there to help us become stronger than we could be on our own. Christ felt every horrible thing that you have; He has descended below all things (Doctrine and Covenants 88:6), so His atonement would be able to touch everyone. He knows the deepest of sorrow, depression, fear, anxiety, pain, and insecurity. You don't have to hold onto it; He is ready and willing to take your burden. In Matthew 11:28-30 it says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
In David A. Bednar's talk in the April 2015 General Conference, Therefore They Hushed Their Fears, he talks about three steps to hush your fears. 1) Look to Christ. 2) Build upon the foundation of Christ. 3) Press forward with faith in Christ. I think these three steps could be used to overcome feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, or whatever is weighing you down in this life, not just overcoming fear. I'm not saying that if you follow those steps, Christ will stop your trials, but He will make you able to bear them, by having you rely on Him and His timing. This is because we need to have hard times in our life; if we want to grow and change, we need to go through the hard moments. It's the hard moments of life that show us what we really are and what we really believe. Those are the moments that show what is important to us and what isn't. The hard moments in life can make you stronger or weaker than you were before; it is all about how you react to them.
Going back to David A. Bednar's talk, the last step to hush your fears was to press forward with faith in Christ. He says press forward instead of step forward. Pressing forward with faith in Christ, in the face of fear and thoughts of inadequacy, is going to be hard work. It isn't going to be easy, but nothing in life that is worth achieving is easy. However, the end result of pressing forward with faith in Christ will be more than worth it. God loves all of His children, and He wants His children to be truly happy. It even says in 2 Nephi 2:25 "Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." Even when the path the Lord is leading along seems too difficult, remember that the Lord knows your limits, and He will never give you something that was more than you can handle without being ready to lend a hand. Trust in God, and He will make more out of your life than you would be able to on your own. In times of trouble, remember that you are not alone; Christ will be there to ease your burden every step of the way.
